    K Pouramin, Seyed Mahdi Khatami, A Shamsodini
    Journal PapersUrban Design Discourse-a Review of Contemporary Litreatures and Theories , Volume 1 , Issue 1, 2020 March 10, {Pages 69-83 }

    Abstract

    Forming urban heat islands is a serious challenge of the present age and a concern of academic communities. Attention to this issue has increased tremendously in scientific articles and researches, particularly in the last decade. With regard to the importance of the issue, the aim of this study is to form a systematic review and thematic analysis of articles and other researches in this field. Moreover, the content of the key articles was analyzed and the most important factors affecting the formation of urban heat islands were represented in a diagram and each of them was analyzed separately. As examined, urban heat islands are affected by climatic and urban construction factors. The climatic factors include sunlight, wind speed and direc

    Developing a Research Agenda on the Relationship between Physical Environment and Mental Health

    Journal PapersUrban Structure and Function Studies , Volume 7 , Issue 25, 2020 December 21, {Pages 85-114 }

    Abstract

    After two decades of focused global efforts on the link between the physical environment and health, while most of these studies have focused on the objective components of obesity and obesity, there is little research to improve mental health, especially in the country Iran. Accordingly, the present paper attempts to provide a research agenda for urban designers by reviewing the narrative of empirical literature and empirical evidence, and outlining the main challenges and ambiguities that research faces. A variety of databases and search engines such as Google Scholar, Pop Fashion, Scopus and Web of Science have been used to find articles. Selected articles were chosen on the basis of subject relevance, number of citations, and recent fin

    Journal PapersNaqshejahan-Basic studies and New Technologies of Architecture and Planning , Volume 9 , Issue 3, 2019 December 10, {Pages 157-166 }

    Abstract

    Aims: Numerous articles and books on the concept of" Islamic city" have been written by Muslim scholars and western orientalists over the past decades. Some scholars have indicated that the concept of an Islamic city is not appropriate with the requirements of contemporary times and on the other hand, some scholars argue that there is a need for more attention. The aim of this study in the first step was to classify and analyze different readings of Islamic city and it was rethinking the definition based on the requirements of contemporary times in the second step.Instruments & Methods: The present study is descriptive-analytical and exploratory research. Data collection was conducted using library studies and depth interviews with experts

    From Modesty to Immodesty: A Quranic Reading of Change in the Islamic Iranian City

    Seyed Mahdi Khatami, Michael Tawa
    Journal Papers , 2016 January , {Pages 61-70 }

    Abstract

    To comprehend traditional Islamic urbanism, and draw lessons for contemporary practice, a deep conceptual understanding of the philosophical and religious parameters that influenced the development of Islamic cities is essential. Nowadays, traditional Islamic urbanism is appreciated and promoted in academic circles and architectural schools, while in many cases its lessons are ignored in practice. A mitigating factor is that traditional urbanism is considered merely in terms of the physical aspects of the city, whereas a city in fact contains and makes human lives. These two dimensions of the city reciprocally affect and inform each other and are both necessary to give a better understanding of Islamic urbanism, its historica

    The Virtue of Humility in the Islamic City An Investigation of Islamic Ethical Concepts and their Implications for the Built Environment

    Seyed Mahdi Khatami
    Journal Papers , 2016 January 1, {Pages }

    Abstract

    This study investigates the intersection between the Islamic city and Islamic thought through three interconnected registers: jurisprudential, ethical and symbolic. Among these the ethical register has been relatively neglected in the field of research and the literature dealing with the Islamic city, and therefore will constitute a key focus of the thesis. The research provides an overview of four main branches of ethics (teleology, deontology, virtue ethics and contract ethics), together with related literature on the ethics of the built environment, in order to locate Islamic ethics among different kinds of ethical frameworks. Four main ethical dualities emerge: real vs. unreal, consequence vs. duty; personal vs. social, and intention vs

    Interpreting the Islamic Concept of Piety into Architecture.

    Journal PapersInternational Journal of Religion & Spirituality in Society , Volume 5 , Issue 3, 2015 September 1, {Pages }

    Abstract

    In Islamic theology, taqwā is the highest standard for personal conduct in daily life in the sight of God (Qur'an 49: 13), and as such is an important foundation for morals and ethics. The term is usually translated into English as' piety', but this concept does not transfer readily into the spatial realm of architecture. However taqwā has other layers of meaning which may better accommodate translation from a theological to an architectural context. Taqwā literally means' to protect and preserve oneself.'The analogy between taqwā and clothing arrives, in the Qur'an, from its semantic affinity with the concept of covering and adornment, which already indicates certain architectural possibilities. The relationship of the term to humility

    An Architectural Reading of Islamic Virtue

    Seyed Mahdi Khatami, Michael Tawa
    Journal Papers , January , {Pages }

    Abstract

    O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to cover your private parts and as an adornment, but the clothing of taqwa, that is the best.(Quran, 7: 26)Islamic theology privileges the disposition of taqwa as a pivotal component of ethics (Quran, 49: 13). Taqwa is normally translated bypiety', which makes the term a difficult one to interpret for its potential architectural implications. However the translation is wholly inadequate. Taqwa implies multiple semantic layers and resonances for architecture. The term comes from the Arabic root tqy. Its literal meaning is “to protect/preserve oneself", suggesting important analogies and affinities with clothing, concepts of covering and adornment-all key conditions of architecture. The

    Journal Papers , January , {Pages }

    Abstract

    Islamic urbanism has been the subject of considerable study by western scholars since the nineteenth century and by western trained Muslim scholars for several decades. The extant literature covers history, form, technology, socio-cultural settings and climate. Among these works, there is scant material dealing explicitly with the relationship between urbanism and Islamic beliefs. Mostly, the research has two main approaches. The first has concentrated on the reflection of Islamic law and jurisprudence on Islamic urban spaces and public places and the second approach focuses on metaphysical, symbolic and mystical registers of the traditional Islamic city. While these two have impacted on the forms of urban spaces and public places, the main
